Heads down. Thumbs up!

December 28, 2006

I’m hoping everyone who celebrates christmas had a fun one. Some highlights of mine included a subscription to Nylon (so now I don’t have to read it online), Art School Confidential on dvd, and three new lomography cameras! I’ve been having loads of fun shooting with them the past two days.

Today I checked out the Ruth Duckworth exhibition @ the Renwick, and then headed over to one of my faavvvorite museums, the Corcoran, for this really cool multi media business called THE PARADISE INSTITUTE. It is the hardest thing in the world to describe. Basically, a miniature miniature theater set up inside the museum that you go into and watch a film and hear weird things and….it’s supposed to “blur reality and fiction”?????? Freaked me out. good thing I knew no one was sitting next to me or I wouldv’e gone all schizo because it makes you think people are talking to you and stuff. V. Cool, check this out if you liked the Science of Sleep. And for those who maybe have seen it already: “Did you check the stove before we left?” DID YOU???? All it takes is one little spark.

(the inside….the big human seats are behind this, these are little tiny seats that are just there. probably some sort of symbolism I’m not getting)

Also the corcoran is showing some random photos that they own, really really awesome and young and bright and amazing. I loved them all. Two big rooms full on the second floor.  GO! GO!

Highlights of my vacation so far:

1-800-CATHOLIC

Outfits that cost under fifteen dollars.

Animal Sharpeners

The History Boys

“Since we’re all human beings, this show will start in…three minutes” (you have got to love street performers, they are a special breed)

And the woman on the metro who was singing that “love me love me” song, only, slurring her speech… in a purple and teal tracksuit.

Show opening was exciting. Leesel went with me. ‘Twas fun. yeahyeahyeah! Maybe I’ll even sell some things. Who knows.

Okay, so here are some photos and video from Amy Millan and Cat Power!

Amy sounded so beautiful. She’s absolutely darling live. Hardly anyone came to the show, though. I find it funny and a bit ironic that Broken Social Scene and Stars can sell out shows, yet when Amy, their leading lady, goes on an intimate solo tour, she can’t even fill a room at the Black Cat. But I won’t go into my fake fan rant again. Erich Bachmaan (of Crooked Fingers)  opened, by the waay.

“Skinny Boy”

For any Stars fans: Amy played “Look Up”…beautiful, one of my favorites Stars’ songs

And now for some Chan! SUPERB show. Fun night. She played “I Don’t Blame You”. !!Her voice is absolutely the most beautiful and rich and warm and haunting thing I have ever heard. I almost cried—–her voice loses something in recordings, you need to go to a Cat Power show. Even if you don’t listen to her. This woman can siiing. Memphis Rythm Band was excellent.

NPR is so lovely and always records the best concerts! Go HERE to listen to the Cat Power show, look at photos, and listen to an interview w/ Chan.

Tomorrow I wanna get some photos with Santa.

So, you probably know (if you know me?)  that I love making/looking at art, and about a month ago a really exciting opportunity was presented to me. MOCA Gallery in Georgetown is a fabulous place devoted to promoting emerging artists without censorship. (Because a lot of galleries are starting to hate nudies! pffft) MOCA was created by the modern artist CLARK (yes! The Smithsonian and the NGA both have some of his work.) Anyways, I am featured in their December show!!! This is really exciting for me, because it’s my first time showing independently…like not attached to a class, school, whatnot.

So, yeah, four of my photographs are on display at MOCA! If you live in the DC area, come see this show! It will be interesting at the very least. It’s located in Canal Square on 31st and M.

I’ll be at the opening party thing tomorrow night. Wow!
