Thanks to the Washington Post, my morning started at 3:30 today. Erin and I went to the Kennedy Center to camp out in hopes of getting tickets to Sufjan Stevens’ Millenium Stage Anniversary performance in the opera house.
“The buzz is so loud, it may drown out the music: The Kennedy Center’s 10th-anniversary bash for the Millennium Stage on Feb. 5 features the Commodores, the U.S. Navy’s jazz ensemble; the National Symphony Orchestra; and — here comes the real reasons for the hoopla — the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Sufjan Stevens (with a full orchestra), all free.Well, free if you don’t count the lost pay for skipping work. Because about 8 a.m. tomorrow is when the Ken Cen folks say the lines might start to form.To help you land a pair of the hottest tickets in town, we offer The On the Go Guide to Getting Into the Millennium Stage Blowout: The deal: The actual ticket giveaway starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Kennedy Center, 2700 F St. NW, 202-467-4600. It’s two tickets per person. On trying to score for more than one of the shows, which will be staggered, organizers tell us, “It’s possible, but not probable.” But you can watch the shows you don’t get into via simulcast in the foyer.
About Suf: This ticket giveaway is from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Hall of Nations (line forms outside the Kennedy Center to the left, and signs will direct you to the right place). There are about 2,300 seats in the Opera House, so it’s entirely possible that you can snag a pair, but consider camping out, because fans of the eccentric indie musician are a bit obsessed. Odds of Getting In: About the same as the chances “Little Miss Sunshine” will win the Oscar for Best Picture.”
That was in Thursday’s paper. Sweet of them to hype it up so much.
We left home around four and were at the Kennedy center by 4:30. We arrived to a VILLAGE. It was an incredible sight, I would have taken more photos of everyone had my hands not been frozen……The fourth person in line got there Friday at 9 AM (the ticket giveaway started Saturday at 9 AM ….yeah….17 degree weather…..tents…….) Despite the cold, it was so fun. Kids brought grills and instruments and it was fantastic. There was some boy playing the harmonica behind me the whole morning. It was so cute…everyone making new friends and whatnot, cooking breakfast together… Hell, we were with those people for a good five hours. Jesus. It was so worth it. Erin and I were around the 650th people in line….so basically…..WE GOT TICKETS!!! It turned out that anyone who arrived 5:30 or later didn’t get tickets. How sad. There were definitely over two thousand people there. Some people came from New York.
Thank god it was really well organzied. We thought once 9 rolled around we’d get trampled, but they had guards directing people and it was all very nice. The lady who handed me my ticket congratulated me….haha. Erin and I slept on the metro ride home…we must have looked homeless….we had camping gear and chairs and blankets….I got home around 11 and slept until 5:30. Then I ate chinese food with Pat and went into Shirlington to see the Painted Veil. Which I would have loved, buuut the ending was just….saaaad and it didn’t really wrap up the movie, you know? I really liked the music they chose, however…It worked so well. And it was a really pretty movie, the setting and all…I want to see Venus…and I’m getting shamefully excited about Factory Girl. I can’t wait. I’m a sucker for Warhol-anythings.
So yeah, the Anniversary Concert is Monday February 5th and I cannot wait!!!! I think they’ll allow photos, so I’m definitely looking forward to sharing whatever I get. This is my first time seeing Sufjan.
