February 25, 2007

Ever since coming upon one if his books at a shop a few months ago, I have been a big fan of David Shrigley’s drawings. They are always entertaining and sometimes really insightful….but most importantly incredibly unique. I really love them. Here are some I just pulled off some sitess, enjoy!

Right now I’m also obsessed with his photography.

this one is called “ARSON”

Last week I said I didn’t want to go to school this week…. Well, I didn’t.

 This was my week, basically:

 Monday: home sick

Tuesday: Got out early b/c of snow

Wed: Off, snow, sleeping

Thursday: Off, snow, thrifting, confusing plans

Friday: Off, Chinatown, show @ St. Elmo’s, woodhull residence

I got home around 9:30 this morning and I slept all day. Anyways, how cool is it that I didn’t want to go to school and ended up not having to. A half day of school the entire week—-Fantastic!

AND

In my previous post I wrote a fair amount about Andy Cabic  (the current crush) annnnd….

I found out where he works!

”Aardvark Books, 227 Church St. SF CA 94114…come visit.”

….I actually am dying to visit San Francisco….I want to go this summer. And I also want Andy Cabic. Sounds perfect.

I’ll leave you with this nice photo of D.Banhart licking the side of Andy’s face…

Sufjan Stevens, Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver, Vandaveer, Factory Girl.

Last Monday was the 10th Anniversary of the Millenium Stage program at the Kennedy Center. Last Monday Sufjan Stevens played. With a full orchestra. He opened with “The Incarnation” off of his Christmas box set. Beautiful. Then he played Casimir Pulaski Day. Incredible. He played Sevens Swans, which sounded fantastic as well. But everything sounded fantastic! He ended with “Her Majesty Snowbird” which he’s been playing at a lot of his shows lately. It was breathtaking with the orchestra.

Casimir Pulaski Day

(I also have an amazing video of Her Majesty Snowbird, but because it’s really long I can’t upload it onto Youuuutubbbbe…..I’ll try to get it on here sometimme.)

It was really strange to see him perform in a suit and tie. Even though the music was spectacular, he didn’t seem to be himself. He looked really nervous. He forgot some words here and there. But I enjoyed seeing him nervous, because I don’t think any artist should ever feel completely comfortable playing in front of more than 2000 people. I really felt like it said something about his character, like hasn’t gotten used to all the fame. Like he couldn’t believe all of those people were there to see him.

…From the angle I was sitting at, the drum behind him framed his face like a halo. And then it hit me. Sufjan Stevens is Jesus! Why hadn’t I realized this? Especially with the beard he has been sporting. Sufjan will deliver you from evil.

Then on Friday I wandered over to the Rock and Roll Hotel to see Vandaveer, Vashti Bunyan and Vetiver. Vandaveer is local. Vandaveer is actually Mark Heidinger. He plays really really great folky fantastic fun. Go friend him on myspace here. I suggest listening to “Marianne You’ve Done It Again”.

I just have to say I really like the Rock and Roll Hotel. Although they seem to be taking a fair amount of business away from my beloved Black Cat, it’s a really nice atmosphere and the people are very nice. It just happens to be in a terrible part of town. Oh well.

Okay, so VASHTI. This woman is so beautiful. For those who aren’t familiar with her, she’s an English folk singer from the sixties. That’s a horrible description of this amazing woman, but hey. She’s also worked with Devendra Banhart and Animal Collective. Now I have your attention. I really loved that before each song she played, she kind of gave us the song’s background. She would tell us what she was thinking when she was writing it, where she was, the year….it was nice to here her insight.

After Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver played. I love Vetiver. I can’t help it. I have a huge crush on Andy Cabic (who’s from Northern VA, his dad was at the show). He was wearing these really great rust colored pants. He has a nice ass. Oh yeah, besides having nice butts, they also play incredible music.  They played most of my favorites, which I’m ecstatic abouttt. They did a really fabulous Great Speckled Bird cover. Too bad I can’t find the song anywhere. arr.

Vetiver is also friends with Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom and co. Right now they are based in Saaaannnnn Francisco.

Farther On

Saturday night I saw Factory Girl @ E street with Leesel and Erin. I really liked it. Guy Pearce was absolutely perfect as Andy Warhol—he made me love Andy and Andy’s superficiality even more. aaaah. Sienna Miller made me HATE Edie Sedgwick. Maybe that’s just because I hate Sienna Miller. I really loved how this movie was filmed. It was also a very attractive movie in terms of people and clothes. Hayden Christensen as the “unnamed musician” (who everyone knows is Bob Dylan) was incredibly good looking. This is a fun movie. It’s not spectacular, but it’s fun to watch.

Next Friday night a teacher from my school who is also a folk singer is playing at St. Elmo’s cafe in Alexandria. If you don’t have anything to do check it out. Heer name is Stella Schindler.

Annnnd I do not want to go to school this week. Who’s with me? (Everyone.)
