Hi

April 22, 2007

New York was great. I really think I’ll go to college in the city (Pratt has caught my eye). The very first thing I did was go to the photography institute. They always have really interesting shows. That night I saw In the Heights, the off broadway musical I was really skeptical about. It was fantastic. The music was excellent and I liked the story as well. It was set in a barrio in new york city, and focused on this group of latino immigrants who were confused as to where their real home was. It was a really pleasant surprise.

The next day we gallery hopped…..as always, the met still gives me panic attacks and extreme anxiety and makes me feel completely disoriented. They had a really great multi media exhibiton though. Well worth the discomfort. I went to a place I’d never been to before, the Neue Gallery. The Gallery is actually this beautiful old home near the met. There was van gogh exhibit going on. it was very nice. That night we went to the Morgan library and saw sean lennon at irving plaza….or the filmore….apparently it has two names.

Sean Lennon was pretty good. His latest album, Friendly Fire, is good. Good music. Really, but nothing insanely original. I enjoyed the show, but watching him I kind of felt like I wasn’t watching an actual musician playing….make sense? maybe. He got the words to spectacle all messed up and his blazer was too tight. The crowd was so great though.  I was expecting a much more emotionless type of crowd, but everyone was very nice and animated. Saw Yoko and co. haaaaahaaha. Women and Children opened.

Wait for me

I also got a video of headlights which is my favorite song off of friendly fire. it’s hiding.

I spent all of Saturday in the village….more like in marc jacobs. Yes, just like every other teenage girl, I too love marc jacobs. big surprise. I tried on everything and settled on a cute dress and some other things. I really like the neighborhoods in Greenwich village because they feel more liveable than a lot of the city.  Hung out in washington square….there must have been some film project assigned at NYU or pratt or something because there were lots of kids in costume with cameras…..and a unicycler who swallowed swords.  The banana boy was my favorite.

That night we left. Then back to school. I couldn’t pull of a ride home from ratatat. my heart aches. Thursday night I saw TV on the Radio. The Noisettes opened, they were so amazing and energetic! Their lead singer has the best stage presence I have ever seen. TVotR was amazing as well. They opened with “Tonight”…..it sounded so beautiful live, definitely one of my favorite songs off of return to cookie mountain. They are so much better live than recorded. Now I only want to listen to them if I can see them live. Wolf Like me was crazy, as expected. They ended with Staring at the Sun. A pretty perfect show, I’d say. oh and I was riiight in front of Kip. : )

I’m off.

April 11, 2007

Tomorrow morning I leave for nyccc on the traaain. I’ve only ever taken the train to New York. I like it so much. I’m seeing an off broadway musical about a Latin neighborhood. It’s the called the heights. I’m seeing that because PAT didn’t want to see “Jewtopia”. Why doesn’t anyone else appreciate fine, intellectual, thought provoking entertainment?!

I’m also seeing Sean Lennon while I’m there. Casiotone for the Painfully alone and High places are playing at the cake shop while I’m there too…I might try to go to that…it depends on what I’m doing. Of Montreal is also playing at some party….there going to be doing a karaoke contest??? There are prizes or something? Saturday morning I’m going to go to some flea market in chelsea or something.

Today I finally saw the Virgil Marti/ Pae White installation at the Hirshhorn. It was cool. Virgil’s work is really really awesome:

The worst part is that Virgil Marti AND Pae White are speaking at the Hishhorn tomorrow night…..and I’m going to be in Ny. Why does everything have to happen when I’m gone? I would love to go. I’m really really really really really upset that I have to miss it. So someone should go for me and tell me all about it! It’s tomorrow night, 6:30, at the Hirshhorn Ring Auditorium.

:-(

But I’m sure my little trip will make up for it.

April 7, 2007

Wed. night I saw Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Shearwater, and Xiu Xiu.

Of course, as seems to be a trend at r’n'r, the show got off to a late start. whatever. It was so good.

I went alone but I found a buddy soon enough so it was all good. Casiotone went first. Owen reminds me of a baby seal.  He was fantastic. The entire night the sound was a little off so it was tough to here the vocals.

He played a new song called Sunday Street that was really really great. The bass was so loud it felt like there was someone stuck underneath the stage banging on it to get out. The entire night was really loud actually. It was nice.

In all the videos you can barely hear the vocals. It’s the same for the xiu xiu ones too sorry…

this is owen’s cover of Love Connection by parenthetical girls:

After him, Shearwater came on. I hadn’t listened to them before and I was so impressed. They were fantastic. So much energy. Their drummer is named THOR, has a blonde mullet, and must be a Norse God. One of their songs’ drumming was played on bicycle handlebars. Amazing live, really really. It’s a shame I only got one video of them.

Then finally XIU XIU. This was my first time seeing them. What impressed me most was how dedicated they are to making each song sound as close to the recording as possible….and with xiu xiu that’s no easy feat. They’d be playing ten instruments at once and drop everything to go bang some random cow bell once……because that’s how they intended their song to be presented and wouldn’t excpect anything less. Perfectionists! And I also never realized how short Jamie is. He kind of gave me the creeps. He makes some ridiculously frightening faces. But they were excellent. I think being dizzy and half deaf helped make the performance more memorable. My physical state kind of matched their music.

Thursday I went to the zoo for the first time in forever to celebrate my friend’s birthday.  My friends chose that location for her birthday party because she always complains about never having a childhood since she grew up in a third world country. It was a lot of fun. I played the family pastor.

Thhheeennn thursday night I saw sondre lerche with a friend at the Birchmere….I thought it would be in the bandstand but it wasn’t….it was a seated show………so towards the end a lot of us went up to the stage to dance.

Sondre is very…very….very handsome. And little. And plaid-clad…….he was really fun. He sounded great and dances really cutely. After the show he signed things and took photos with people. it was cute. I didn’t really like the crowd though. oh well.

i need to get some film developed. i took a lot of photos at the zoo. im excited.
