I Know Where the Summer Goes

May 21, 2008

When I was in new york I went to the latest Ryan McGinley show , I Know Where the Summer Goes, at TEAM gallery. The show featured photographs from his last annual roadtrip, where he shot 4,000 roles or something? That’s over 100,000 photographs. Out of those he meticulously narrowed them down to fifty, which were at TEAM from April 3rd to May 3rd. I’m obviously running a little behind, ha!

(this one’s on the cover of this month’s VICE)

The photographs are very beautiful. The thing I love about Ryan’s work is that although the majority of it is staged; the photos look incredibly candid. They are always exciting and draw you in.

There were three portraits in the lower level of the gallery which really showcased some of the amazing things Ryan can do with light and color. He really is turning out to be one of the greatest photographers of our generation.

AND MY FAVORITE:

kids and their bikes, what could be more beautiful?

It was one of the highlights of my last trip. I can’t describe how thrilling it was to see his images right in front of me.

I can’t even remember when after hours at the hirshhorn was, but Lucky Dragons and Hooliganship performed!!!!! Lucky dragons was honestly one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Their music is created by human contact, so it is basically all about collaboration and diy. It was amazing. And  inspiring. How fun is it to have the audience make the music and to facilitate that yourself? I don’t know how it really works technically, but there is a reason why Luke Fishbeck was included in the 2008 whitney biennial.

make baby doc:

After lucky dragons was the Hooliganship performance. I you have ever seen the multi v’s, think the male version of us with equally rad costumes! haha i really enjoyed them. They are a multi media experience. I’m not sure what else to say. Check out their website: http://www.hooliganship.com/index.html

(they said their projection was 3D, it was not, this is why i like them)

Wednesday night was the sartorialist reception and the jeff lewis/cribs show. Both were fun. Adamson gallery was super packed with attractive people and the thermostat was on 81 (yeah i checked ok). It was awkward/nice. Scott Shuman is tiny/has lots of suitors.

polaroids by lexie moreland, the prettiest photographer i ever did see

Then I walked down the street to see jeff lewis. He was eveyrthing i had hoped for. He played with his girlfriend and his brother Jack, they sounded so fantastic. My favorite songs of the night were Champion Jim (with his comics projected onto a sheet), Don’t Be Upset, and one of the best Crass songs, I ain’t thick its just a trick. Jeff and the jitters were so special and down to earth and sounded damn fine. I’m so happy I got to see him.

Ra ra riot was next. They didn’t sound too great, pleasant, but I guess it’s hard to follow up such a unique artist like Jeffrey Lewis.

And then los cribs. I saw them my freshman year and remembered them being loud and sounding the same on every song, which was the case this time too but it was still a really fun set!!!!! Even though a lot of their songs sound alike they put on a great live show. I really enjoyed their set. And they’re cute. Kate nash was there lookin a hot mess, i guess she’s probably dating one of the brothers???

ra ra rasputin + bodies of water videos comin uppp!

ps. my scanner esta roto so there is a lack of photographic accompaniment for my posts. lo siento ninos!

Holy Fuck + Fiery Furnaces

February 11, 2008

Sorry this is a few weeks late. The show was actually for super furry animals but they’re not very good, so we left after los furnacios. Holy Fuck opened, they are a fun party/jam/dance band, and had some really neat equipment, but thats basically the extent of their musical ability. I mean they were fun, but I’d consider them more as DJ’s than a band. Great to dance to!!!

Then the Fiery Furnaces!!! They are definitely a favorite band of mine. Eleanor was so beautiful in person, she wore high waisted blue jeans and a super high collared blouse, with these really adorable cut out booties and funny socks. I loved how they organized their set too.  They played mashups basically, they would begin to play one song then go into a different song and then return to the first song. It was amazing, but I could tell that people there that weren’t familiar with their music were confused. Overall, they are a super tight band and eleanor’s voice sounds beautiful!!! Coolcoolcool.
